Since 1986 the Society for the Promotion of Sudanese Studies, located at the Department of African Studies, University of Vienna, edits the international journal "Beiträge zur
Sudanforschung".
It covers by its contents geographically the area between the first
cataract of the Nile and Southern Sudan and chronologically the period from
prehistory up to the end of the Christian Nubian kingdoms. The themes of the
contributions concern history, historiography, archaeology, architecture, religion, art,
iconography, sociology, economy, ecology, languages, etc. of prehistoric, ancient, and
medieval Sudan.
"Beiträge zur Sudanforschung" comprises articles (up to about 35 pages in print),
miscellania (up to 6 pages in print), reviews, an annual bibliography of studies in the
areas and fields mentioned (with abstracts in succession to the Annual Egyptological
Bibliography), and news.
